Preoperative fasting instructions

All patients undergoing anaesthesia or sedation need to fast prior to their procedure. This is to reduce the risk of regurgitation and aspiration into the lungs. Avoid fatty/rich food.Clear fluids (water preferred) may be allowed up to 2 hours prior to anaesthesia. Clear cordial/sports drink or BLACK tea or BLACK coffee are also permitted. NO MILKChewing gum and lollies are not permitted as they may increase gastric acid productionThe hospital will usually call you the evening prior to your procedure to confirm your fasting instructions.
